Jean batten

1. Early life and family                                                                                                                                      Jane Gardner batten was born on 15 September 1909 in Rotorua . She soon became know as jean. In 1913 she moved to Auckland with her parents and two older brothers. In 1917 her father, Frederick, a dentist, volunteered to join the new Zealand Expeditionary Force and was sent to the western front.

2. Education and school life                                                                                                                             
    In 1922, Jean was sent to ladies' College, a girls' boarding college in Remuera at her fathers expense. Although she later described her time at the school as a happy one, she had few friends and many of her fellow students found her to be aloof.

3. Career and major accomplistiment                                                                                                                     She flew the gull from Australia to England in 5 days, 18 hours, establishing a solo record c for pilots of either sex], and becoming the first person to hold simultaneously England - Australia solo records in both direction's . This, at 28, was Jean Batten's fines' hour. It was also her last long - distance flight. 

4. Personal Interests and hobbies                                                                                                                          Batten was sent by her parents to England to study music, but she became intensely interested in flying and earned a private pilot's license in lasso. She gained a commercial pilot's license in 1932.

5. Impact on others                                                                                                                                             She reflects on challenge including loneliness in the air, dealing with terrible storms, and flying during on out break of the plague in Senegal. However, she also touches on positive experiences which arose from flying. giving us insight into the life of an aviator in the 1930s.
